GB 28883 composite seamless steel tubes are pressure-bearing bimetallic seamless tubes designed for boilers, pressure vessels, and pressure piping where the tube must combine mechanical strength from the base metal with corrosion resistance from the cladding metal. The standard defines the tube as a composite structure made from different inner and outer steel grades, with ordering based on “outer grade + inner grade” and wall thickness shown as “base layer + cladding layer.” The standard scope covers dimensions, tolerances, technical requirements, testing, inspection, marking, packaging, and quality certificates for pressure service.

  1. Defined composite wall structure: base metal thickness is controlled at 50%–90% of total wall thickness, while cladding thickness is controlled at 10%–50%, allowing the tube to balance pressure strength and corrosion resistance.
  2. Verified bonding performance: metallurgical fusion composite tubes require bonding shear strength of ≥210 MPa, and metallurgically bonded explosion-formed composite tubes require ≥140 MPa. Buyers may specify ≥260 MPa for metallurgical fusion composite tubes.
  3. Pressure integrity control: each tube is hydrostatically tested using P = 2SR/D, with allowable stress based on 80% of the base metal yield strength, maximum pressure 20 MPa, and holding time not less than 10 seconds.
  4. NDT requirement for fusion composite tubes: metallurgical fusion composite seamless tubes require full-length ultrasonic testing according to GB/T 5777-2008, acceptance level L2.
  5. Surface defect limit: surface defect removal depth must not exceed 10% of wall thickness, and the remaining wall thickness must not be less than the minimum permitted value. Straight-line surface defects must not exceed 4% of wall thickness, with a maximum depth of 0.2 mm.
